The Young Assyrians Lobbying

The Young Assyrians Executive Committee continued its advocacy in the Australian Parliament House, meeting with Senators and Members of Parliament to advance the interests of the Assyrian Australian community.

We were pleased to meet with Senator Jessica Collins, Deputy Opposition Whip in the Senate, the Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy, and Dai Le MP, Federal Member for Fowler.

Our discussions focused on the outcomes of our recent Policy Summit on the Future of the Nineveh Plains, the importance of continued bipartisan engagement on issues affecting Assyrians both in Australia and overseas, and our ongoing advocacy for the interests of Australian Assyrians. Through constructive dialogue with elected representatives, we remain committed to ensuring our community's voice is heard and that the issues impacting Assyrian Australians continue to receive attention at the highest levels of government.

Joint Justice Initiative (JJI)

The Young Assyrians are proud to work alongside our partners in the Joint Justice Initiative (JJI) to advocate for the formal recognition of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek Genocides across every Australian state and territory, as well as by the Australian Parliament.

Our advocacy also extends to promoting the inclusion of these genocides within the Australian high school curriculum, ensuring future generations understand the history, consequences and importance of recognising these crimes against humanity.

Most recently, representatives of the Armenian, Assyrian and Greek communities met in Canberra to continue advancing this shared campaign. As part of this engagement, we also met with ACT Minister for Multicultural Affairs Michael Pettersson MLA to discuss genocide recognition, education and the importance of continued government engagement with our communities.

Through ongoing collaboration with governments, parliamentarians and community organisations, we remain committed to advancing historical truth, justice, education and recognition for all three communities.

Policy Summit on the Future of the Nineveh Plains

On 1 July, The Young Assyrians proudly hosted the Policy Summit on the Future of the Nineveh Plains at Australian Parliament House, bringing together parliamentarians, policymakers, community leaders and advocates to discuss the future of the Assyrian homeland and the role Australia can play in supporting its long-term security, stability and self-determination.

The Young Assyrians President, Dennis Suro, participated in a panel discussion on youth engagement in politics, highlighting the importance of empowering the next generation of Assyrian leaders to advocate for their community and engage in public life. The Young Assyrians Vice-President, Bineil Misho, officially opened the summit on behalf of the organisation, welcoming attendees and reaffirming our commitment to meaningful advocacy and bipartisan engagement.

The summit marked an important milestone in our ongoing work to elevate the Assyrian voice in Australian public policy and strengthen relationships with elected representatives and stakeholders committed to the future of the Nineveh Plains.
