ANCA President Honoured as Senior Ambassador at ASEAN Ceremony in Canberra


Canberra, ACT — On Tuesday, 19 November 2024, Mr. Hermiz Shahen, President of the Assyrian National Council - Australia Inc. (ANCA), and Mr. Albert Shlemon, ANCA Board Member, participated in a momentous event at Parliament House in Canberra. The occasion marked the unveiling of an amendment to the Constitution of the Australian South East Asian Network (ASEAN) National Initiative for Democracy and Australian Values.


Mr. Shahen was bestowed the distinguished title of Senior Ambassador for ASEAN, representing the Assyrian-Australian community. Mr. Shlemon witnessed and endorsed the ASEAN Joint Statement, underscoring the importance of collaboration in promoting democratic principles and multicultural harmony.


During this historic event, Mr. Shahen delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude on behalf of all attendees. In his address, he acknowledged the inspiring efforts of Mr. Sawathey EK and his dedicated team for organising the initiative. “Your vision has united diverse communities and leaders to celebrate our shared values of democracy, inclusivity, and unity,” Mr. Shahen stated.


He extended heartfelt appreciation to the Hon. Chris Bowen MP, Minister for Climate Change and Energy; Dr. Andrew Charlton MP; and the Hon. Matt Thistlethwaite MP, Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs, for their presence and steadfast support of multicultural resilience in Australia. Mr. Shahen also commended the event’s Master of Ceremonies, Khim Greenaway and Dylan EK, for their professionalism, and Andrea Nevill for her acknowledgment of the traditional custodians of the land.


The ceremony was enriched by vibrant cultural performances from Cambodia, Laos, India, Indonesia, and Burma, reflecting the diverse heritage of Australia’s communities. Distinguished panel discussions, led by notable figures such as Dr. Kay Danes OAM and Dr. Patricia Jenkins, further highlighted the importance of constitutional amendments for democratic advancement.


The presentation of ASEAN Founder’s Medals and Awards and the appointment of Ambassadors, both Senior and Youth, were among the highlights of the event. These accolades celebrated exceptional individuals dedicated to promoting democracy and Australian values.


“Today’s event is a testament to the power of unity and collaboration,” Mr. Shahen said. “Let us continue to build a nation where diversity and democracy thrive hand in hand.”
